Using Essential Oils Safely

A few things to keep in mind when using Essential Oils. Essential oils can be used safely by your family for a variety of wellness applications. However, there are several safety guidelines that you should follow when using essential oils and essential oil products.

1. Use only 100% Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil products.

2. Essential Oils can be used Aromatically, Topically, and Internally, HOWEVER not all can be used in each of these ways. Be sure to read and follow all label warnings and instructions prior to use. (bottle labels, packaging labels, product catalogs or online information should be considered)

3. If redness, irritation, or burning occurs when using Essential Oils topically, apply a vegetable oil such as fractionated coconut oil or olive oil to the affected area. Do not dilute with water, it will only cause the oil to be driven in further as oil and water repel one another.  Add diluting oil to Essential Oil until relief is experienced and then wipe with a dry towel.  Water and soap may then be used to remove scent.

4. Essential Oils should not be used in the eyes or inside the ear canal.  In the event of accidental contact with the eye, dilute with vegetable oil NOT water.

OR rinse with MILK! It may sound strange, but the fat and cream in milk are a safe means of diluting and rinsing Essential Oils from eyes and the cold cool milk brings quick, safe, effective relief from burning. Tilt head back and dump small lid or capful of milk directly into eye, then tilt head forward to drain, and wipe clean with dry towel. Repeat once or twice more as needed.

5.  Do NOT consume an Essential Oil internally unless labeled with a Supplement Facts box with specific dietary supplement use instructions and warnings.

6. Discontinue the use of an essential oil if you experience severe skin, stomach, or respiratory irritation or discomfort.

7. When using on children, the elderly or someone with sensitive skin, always use a carrier oil (coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil) to protect their delicate skin. Apply a very small amount of oil with a carrier oil to test skin or other sensitivity. The bottoms of children's feet may be the only location that you might not need a carrier oil as the skin is typically tough and not sensitive. Always us a carrier oil when applying to an infant, even to the bottom of their feet, as their skin is more delicate.

8. Do not apply Essential Oils to the hands of small children as they may instantly rub their hands on face, mouth, or eyes, causing irritation and burning.  After applying Essential Oils, keep your hands away from your eyes.

9. Do not put pure Essential Oils in plastic containers. Always use glass or stainless steel containers for mixing, diluting, or serving Essential Oils. Essential Oils can break down some types of plastic and you do not want to ingest those petroleum based chemicals or absorb them topically through your skin. (specially made high-quality plastic containers can be used for diluted EOs, click here to check them out)

It is important to remember that pure therapeutic grade essential oils are highly-concentrated plant extracts and should be used with reasonable care. Consulting with someone who has experience with essential oils will make your first experience with essential oils more enjoyable and rewarding. As you learn how to use essential oils through personal experience, share your knowledge with others in a safe and responsible way and encourage others to do the same.
